Spam of the Attention Whore

We all want to be seen.

I’m as guilty of attention whoring as anyone.

We log into these social networking programs and then our ego starts to inflate as people pay attention.  We digitally wave our arms and yell until someone gives us some attention…and now we’re all addicted.

This addiction has given companies a chance to focus marketing on us…the watch every keystroke we make…every time we click the mouse…and they pay attention so that they can sell…Sell…SELL!

A bit of a paradox in that they are taking advantage of our mutual addiction in order to do this…also that we have to pay for them to allow us access to this.

I, for one, don’t recall the last day I did not log into either Facebook or Twitter.  Even when I didn’t have net access, I was still able to get into it with the mobile.

Anyone regularly using Twitter knows about ‘the Bots’…an example today, I reTweeted someone’s comment about how easy it is for a woman to lose weight if she dumps her clingy, deadbeat boyfriend…with impressive speed, I was contacted by a weight loss service organization…”Let us help you lose weight!  Look how easy here:…” #facepalm

Sorry…hashtags have become a pride of mine… #hashtagssuck

Everybody is selling something and, indirectly, they have our attention.

This is how they get us…get us addicted and then reel us in so that we now have friends online…ten years ago, anyone claiming to have an online friend would have been shot a rather questionable glance, but now thanks to decent (not perfect) marketing and PR from the likes of Facebook and Twitter…this is the norm.

As such, being the good attention whores that we are, not only are we competing with each other for a voice, but with marketing departments of corporations…in some cases unknowingly becoming friends with someone who is here to market and not to ‘play’…and these situations mean that they will recruit these friends in order to gain more access to the market.

We all sit back and claim how unfair it is that these companies have access to us…and with Facebook specifically, we all know how sacred privacy is to them…not at all…yet we all log in again, and again.  Some of us alter our personal schedules so we have time to log in even if we don’t have a specific reason…other than to wave our arms and yell for attention.

So, how do we avoid allowing these marketing companies into our business…how do we retake our privacy?

Turn off the computer…step away…and no one will get spammed.

End rant…for now.

Find ways to kill the ads, like a Firefox extension called “AdBlock Plus”. And tinker with Facebook to mess up their information-gathering scheme. Never say “Less internet”! 😉

I’ve got my FB pretty clean; I’m very disappointing, from an advertiser’s point of view. Bots are a different thing; they operate on key words, and unless you want to speak only in two-letter words, you’ll get botted. 🙂

This post made me smile….the bots on twitter are insane, I have had some real special ones. I think the most insane one was when I tweeted about my curtains and got a whole load of curtain companys following me….they found themselves bloked…..or when I was discussing my wonderful bread maker with someone and the smell of fresh bread….that got me Morphy Richards as a follow….also blocked……but the best one has to be when I my Master’s one, who mentioned Christmas back in August and immediatly found himself followed by Santa!

For me it’s just all part of the insanity of twitter………

    • The bots were more what I was speaking of. River is right…easy to block adverts, but the marketers find ways around them with the bots.

My personal fav is, being Canadian, I occasionally discuss the health care issue in the US…the lovely health care insurance bots hit me hard each time…considering I’m covered under our universal health care, it shows they even miss their mark.
