Ahab in 1984

Lily Sloane: I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt your little quest. Captain Ahab has to go hunt his whale!

Jean-Luc Picard: [offended] What did you say?

Sloane: You do have books in the 24th-century don’t you?

Picard: This is not about revenge!

Sloane: Liar!

Picard: [agitated] This is about saving the future of humanity!

Sloane: Jean-Luc, blow up the damn ship!!

Picard: NO! NOOOOOOOOO!!! [smashes a display case in anger; Both pause, shocked] I will not sacrifice the Enterprise. We’ve made too many compromises already, too many retreats. They invade our space, and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds, and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far and no further! And I will make them pay for what they’ve done!

Sloane: [looking at the broken remains of the Enterprise-D model] You broke your little ships. [pause] See you around, Ahab.

Picard: [softly, to himself] “And he piled upon the whale’s white hump the sum of all the rage and hate felt by his whole race. If his chest had been a cannon he would have shot his heart upon it.”

Sloane: What?

Picard: Moby Dick.

Sloane: Actually, I never read it.

Picard: Ahab spent years hunting the white whale that crippled him; but in the end, it destroyed him and his ship.

Sloane: I guess he didn’t know when to quit.

Is this what we have come to?

The unthinkable happened, yesterday…I turned off the news.  It has become tiresome of being told just how paranoid and fearful people should be of this whale know of as “terrorism”.  How it takes vigilance and giving up personal freedoms in order to kill it…allegedly.

It is easy to see just how well those security measures have done.

As Obama has already said in the last 24 hours…yesterday’s culprit(s) are, as of yet, unknown.  Could be a group or one of malevolence…may never know.

The question is, how far are we willing to go to protect ourselves from the unknown?  How many freedoms are we willing to give up in the name of protection from the world’s boogeymen?

How about starting with giving up sensationalist media, for one.  After that…not so much interest in anything further.

We have given up enough already…in fact, too much.  Were these rights and freedoms not what world wars were fought over?  Wars of independence? Now people give them up willingly for fear of those bullies that will not show their faces.

Who are these boogeymen that the media work so hard to outline?  What are the issues that the media work so hard to unearth?

This fight is one against fundamentalism.  Does not matter what religion, politics, class, nor ideal…terrorism is always about fundamentalism in one regard or another.  Our politically correct world will not allow us to ask certain questions…and time to ask the same question that was part of what got Bill Maher fired from his television show just days after 9/11…

Why are these people so pissed off?

Okay…that wasn’t the question that got Maher fired, but there was some backlash at him even asking that question so close to September 11th.

Security against potential terrorism has become like treating acne…wait until the red bump appears…dab at it with a cotton swab…and hope it goes away.  It does not address the cause of it.

Political correctness dictates, however, that the cause cannot be addressed for fear of offending someone.

Ever so briefly, hearing on talk radio this morning, it sounds like there are some people waking up today and saying that they are willing to give up political correctness in lieu of losing more freedoms.

Yet, the boogeyman of terror…that fear of the unknown…is slowly defeating us.  Divide and conquer is how you defeat your enemy.  Those that use fear to fight wars, have been doing a damned good job at dividing…especially with the assistance of the media’s need to separate, catalogue and pigeon-hole every class, culture and creed.  If this keeps up, social networks will be the only thing social about the world.

The biggest fear is not who is hiding around the corner from me…it is that, in our want to be protected, people have given up control and willing walked into Orwell’s 1984.

Perhaps…just perhaps…it is time we just blew up the damned ship.
