People fear the unknown…people fear that which they cannot control…people fear chaos.
When synonyms for thus word include such greats as “mess”, “clutter” and “disorder”…is it any wonder that people see it in a derogatory light?
The best known synonym for chaos, however, is confusion…which begs a question…
Without confusion…without chaos…how do we appreciate calm? Without disorder, how do we acknowledge order?
Chaos is not criminal…it is not evil…well, unless one watches Get Smart often enough. In fact, the stories if Orwell suggest that life without chaos becomes fascism and we become but rats in the maze in or daily dealings with all the hidden cameras that we dance for.
…and dance we do as control takes our creativity away…fade to bleak.
One could see this Get Smart connection again…Control good…Chaos bad. One might think this is a thinly veneered plan…an agenda…trying to control how we view the concepts…
Or one might simply see it as choices of words by a writer. Words chosen because of the implications…not implications because off the writer’s words…words chosen for the chaos they suggest.
“Introduce a little anarchy, upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos, I’m an agent of chaos , and you know the thing about chaos? It’s fair.” – The Joker in The Dark Knight
With my work in the wood industry…no not euphemistic wood…people claim how they love the beauty of natural woodwinds in their walls in nature’s Wonderland…yet in their furniture and other millwork around themthey want controlled designs with no real idea how much of the chaos wood was discarded in order to get that perfect piece of maple lumber.
Chaos can be beautiful…as the Joker said, chaos is usually fair…chaos is rarely violent, much as some like to suggest otherwise…violence is very planned and rarely comes from chaos. The other way around, in fact, as heroes come from the chaos that violence may cause.
Chaos is innovation… spontaneity…birth…creativity…true creativity. It comes from chaotic ideas and the absurd.
In fact, the most chaos driven question ever…what if…?
