Tradition is a wonderful thing. It provides us with that comfy pillow. Something we know. Something we understand. It gives us an excuse to do something stupid (ie: running with the bulls). It gives us an excuse to be racist (ie: the Washington Redskins). It gives us an excuse to feel good about doing something meaningless (ie: prayer). I know parents love to use it for guilt..."We've always gone to church, why don't you?" It gives us an excuse not to decide who to vote for. If gives us a reason to accept the status quo...and things told at face value. Based on a few of these concepts, perhaps tradition should be outlawed. Without tradition, slavery in North America would have been gone even earlier...the Buffalo Bills would have won [Read more...]
Seems ironic to me, after my "Nice Beaver" post yesterday that I must say this today: RIP Leslie Nielsen As I have said before, I am not a celebrity watcher. I do not worry about what Bradgelina are doing with the army they are currently raising before looking at how my kids are raised. However, today I add a fifth to my list of deceased celebrities that affected me. The list, until yesterday: Douglas Adams George Carlin Robert Palmer John Ritter I lean towards those with a sense of humour. Neilsen, on my list does hold the distinction of being the lone Canadian so far. Originally from Saskatchewan, Neilsen was 84. Leslie...thank you for making me laugh and think...not sure anyone outside of Canada might have seen some of your [Read more...]
"Earth that was could no longer sustain our numbers...we were so many..." - Teacher, Serenity I've decided to share a few of my favourites. Over the past five years I've shared tidbits, but now something more direct. Tonight, I'm going to take you all back in time. To a time when I still watched regular television. A Friday evening in late September, 2002. Joss Whedon's newest show, Firefly debuted that evening. A show about a little transport ship crossing the Verse looking for work. Captain Malcolm Reynolds and the eight other crew on the good ship Serenity, Firefly Class. At the time, Firefly was one of the best written shows no one watched. As no one watched, they did thirteen episodes before it was cancelled. A space based show [Read more...]
As I lay here under my covers watching the light come up outside, one thought has occurred to me. "It's too fucking cold!" Being who I am, and where I live...this thought shames me. This country's national animal is a beaver...a majestic animal that is a hard worker...and yes, I'm about to run with this a direction that does not include damn building... I feel as though I'm standing beneath the ladder as the goddess is above...I gaze up and say "Nice beaver" just before she hands me down the stuffed trophy. I've really been on a Naked Gun reference too often lately. Then again, Leslie Nielson is Canadian...and I wonder if Ms. Presley's beaver was as nice as he claimed. If nothing else, Elvis had good taste in how a goddess [Read more...]
'Bout time I did more of this. I've been listening to Jon Stewart's "Earth: A Visitor's Guide" the last few days...listened to it twice, actually, and beyond laughing, it has me thinking on how the larger con artists...better known as religious leaders...have basically hijacked our cultures. Usual disclaimer goes first here...I'm no atheist. I practice something of a bastardization of Paganism and Wicca...I have read Tarot Cards for the last twenty years. I do believe, however, that the word "supernatural" simply means that science hasn't figured it out YET. One day, science will... Those religions claiming to know The Truth, however, stopped looking long ago. Take the pope, for example, who seems to make a once per decade apology [Read more...]
My hands are still near frozen from this morning's events...only so much blowing on them one can do before the fingers dry up and fall off... Have some pictures I'll be posting on Facebook in a bit...no...no nudes...not this time...unless you count a horse as nude when it isn't wearing pants. Speaking of which, she did scream at a couple of stallions on the parade route...not so much in a 'come hither' way, but more in a 'don't you come any closer you dumb fuck!' way. Each horse has their own goofy personality...this particular mare is the oldest we've got in the barn...she's 16. I believe she has 8 foals out there somewhere...one who is with us that is just six months old. One thing I have learned over the past year is how fast these [Read more...]
Today is the Santa Claus parade in these here parts. Being I have a horse involved in this, we're loading her up shortly. During this parade, I will proudly trundle along, shovel in hand, behind said horse...well, proud-ish. I'm also guessing that the part of Santa will not be played by Tim Allen...and, next to Die Hard, that first "The Santa Clause" film is the only one I watch every year. Now, if the fact that I'm Pagan and involved with the Christmas parade bothers you...in the immortal words of George Carlin...you're just going to have to figure that shit out on your own. There is, once again, just a dusting of snow out here. For those not knowing what dusting means in this context...if the sun decides to poke out...or if Mother Earth [Read more...]
Just spent that last two hours engulfed in a wave of Monty Python nostalgia... To paraphrase John Cleese...what kind of fucking crap was that? They truly were the best...watched their pseudo 30th anniversary special which was filmed in 1998...meaning Monty Python is now 42...HOLY SHIT! Not only is that old, but it is ironic as well...of course, for those that don't know, Douglas Adams was one of the Python writers... Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government! Well...back to my blog on comedy that I posted earlier this morning which, I might add, it seems no one read...there is no one like the Pythons anymore.
