I was 15 the summer this song first hit the airwaves...more than 25 years later, it is still among one of the few tunes I can listen to over and over again...
Little known fact about the band, Genesis, was that after Phil Collins split from them in early to mid 1990s, they did try to make a go with a new lead singer. I know I have mentioned this before, but Ray Wilson may be the best vocalist Genesis has had...perhaps not the showman that Collins nor Peter Gabriel are, but a wonderful soulful voice that, given the chance, Genesis might have thrived with. "Calling All Stations", released in 1997, was the one release the band did with Wilson fronting them. Mike Rutherford (think Mike + the Mechanics) and Tony Banks were, of course, were still in place. In my opinion, it is quite possibly the best work the band produced since Gabriel's departure. This is not to say that the band did not do [Read more...]
Have the newest release from Mike + the Mechanics playing in the car as I type this out. It is called The Road and was apparently released back in April, but I just got my hands on it last night. About two thirds through it and there is some good stuff here, but will probably take me a while to warm up to it. This is not the Mike + the Mechanics I grew up with. Like the original group, they have two singers now and one is too American Idol-ish for me. The other is not bad. The names I found are Andrew Roachford and Tim Howar. Again, I am in the car writing this, so I do not know which voice is which, or even song names yet. Other than Mike Rutherford, none of the original members seem to be back from when Rutherford put them together in [Read more...]
It would appear that the plug has finally been pulled on one of my favourite bands, Genesis. Due to a spine issue, Phil Collins officially announced his retirement a short time back, it throws any hope of a reunion into question. There had been talk of Mike Rutherford working on a new Mike + the Mechanics project. There was talk also that, at some point, Genesis would return with Phil behind the drum kit and Peter Gabriel returning as the front man for one final tour. I would like to see either of those. Gabriel has sung once with the band, that I am aware of, since his split from them back in the early 1970s. Was not long and Steve Hacket left as well. With the band as most of us know it...a trio with Tony Banks, Phil Collins and Mike [Read more...]
